Joep vs Callingbird

Callingbird is a Dutch AI receptionist for small businesses, Birdy, with a page for restaurants beside nine other sectors, which according to its own site bills per minute, is live within 15 minutes, holds unlimited calls at once and, with an active integration, puts reservations into your system. Joep is an AI phone assistant made for hospitality only: it answers the phone for snack bars, cafeterias, pizzerias and restaurants and handles the order all the way to the receipt out of your printer and the payment, for one fixed price. Below you see where they meet and where they differ.

Where Callingbird is strong

  • The lowest entry: €20 per month minimum, no setup fee, 30 days to try without payment details, and cancelling with one button and no notice period.
  • Live within 15 minutes: the AI pre-fills the setup from your website, and you keep your own number through call forwarding.
  • Unlimited calls at once, in Dutch and English, with reading along, listening back and a summary after every call.
  • An honest price explanation on its own site, with worked examples and the caveat that long calls come out dearer in a per-minute model.

What Joep does differently

  • Orders from start to finish: the receipt out of your own printer, a Mollie payment link to your own account, and the receipt only once it is paid. Callingbird’s restaurant page is about reserving, not ordering.
  • One fixed price. The break-even point is around 285 call minutes a month: below it Callingbird is cheaper, above it Joep. A busy snack bar with 600 minutes pays Callingbird €210, Joep €100.
  • Before the order, Joep checks whether the address is in your delivery area and adds the delivery fee and minimum order himself.
  • Hospitality only: Joep knows snack bars, cafeterias and pizzerias, reads your menu from a PDF, a photo or an Excel file, and records the reservation himself without an integration on request.

Who suits which?

Callingbird suits a venue with few call minutes that mainly wants the phone answered, questions handled and call-back requests noted, and wants to start as cheaply and quickly as possible. Joep suits a snack bar, cafeteria or pizzeria that wants its phone orders taken all the way to the receipt and the payment, and a restaurant with many calls that would rather pay a fixed price than per minute.

Our verdict

Callingbird is the cheapest way to have an AI answer the phone as long as you get few calls, and its site is honest that the per-minute model is less favourable with many or long calls. For hospitality, Joep finishes the job: orders with receipt and payment, delivery area checked, reservation recorded, for a price that does not grow with the rush. Whoever gets few calls picks Callingbird; whoever takes orders or gets many calls is better off with Joep.

Frequently asked questions

When is Callingbird cheaper than Joep?

Up to about 285 call minutes a month. Callingbird charges €0.35 per minute with a minimum of €20 per month; at 285 minutes you reach about €100, which is Joep’s fixed monthly price. Above that Joep becomes cheaper: at 600 minutes it is €210 against €100. Prices excl. VAT, as on 28 October 2026.

Does Callingbird take phone orders too, like Joep?

Callingbird’s site does not say so: the restaurant page describes reservations, questions and transfers, and for hospitality and delivery the delivery status and frequently asked questions. An ordering feature, a receipt out of your printer or a payment link are not mentioned. Joep puts the order on the receipt out of your own printer without a platform in between and, if you want, sends a Mollie payment link; the receipt only prints once it is paid.

Can Joep book into Zenchef or Formitable, like Callingbird?

No, not yet: Joep records the reservation and confirms it by email, but does not put it into your reservation system. With Callingbird, Zenchef, Formitable, Guestplan and TheFork are in the catalogue, but “on request”: the integration is built when you ask for it. If you want the reservation straight into your system, ask Callingbird what already works for yours.
